By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A COMMUNITY board chairman has been accused of being “abrasive” and “rude” to a resident making a presentation, in a heated meeting last week. Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton demanded that chairman Mike Mora apologise to resident and secretary of the Central Riccarton Residents’ association Garth Wilson after he asked him to leave “the table” repeatedly. But Mr Mora said he was trying to ensure that all people presenting to the community board were give equal amounts of time, and Mr Wilson had been given more than others. The row happened when Mr Mora asked Mr Wilson to leave the community board table after a passionate presentation on issues in the Riccarton area.
The CRRA has asked for certain questions around issues such as the road layout, Riccarton Community Centre and the lack of action on the Clarence St, Dilworth St reserve. Mr Wilson felt the CRRA’s questions had not been answered by the city council at the meeting. The row began when Mr Mora did not allow Ms Broughton to ask another question on Riccarton’s issues. Mr Mora said there were more people waiting to speak and asked Mr Wilson to leave the table. Said Mr Wilson: “This is a breach of democratic rights. You have deliberately cut the time we can speak. Previous people had more than 10 minutes”. Mr Mora responded by again asking Mr Wilson to leave the table. This led to Ms Broughton calling a point of order on the grounds Mr Mora was being “abrasive” and “rude.” •Turn to page 3

IT IS a hard thing indeed to watch someone lose their battle to cancer. But imagine being an eightyear-old and watching your best mate only a year younger than yourself succumb to the horrid disease. That is the story about Hunter Allen and his mate Tyler Moore. Like so many kids, they met through their mothers and shared a love of games such as Lego and Minecraft. But then cancer came along and claimed Tyler. Last week, Hunter had his head shaved in honour of his friend. It was made even more special, that the person holding the clippers was Tyler’s mum, Sarah Moore, and it was done in the hall where the funeral was held. I’ve no shame in admitting it brought a tear to the eye. Hunter, you are a champ. Hei kona, Shelley Robinson

Residents upset alley to stay open
Tempers flare at meeting
as cables before going out for public consultation. Residents nearby were initially looking to purchase the land to close it and resolve the issue. Resident Mary-Ann Belcher said she was unaware the decision to leave it open had been made and the price to close it was too expensive. “We have lost the fight,” she said. Mrs Belcher said nothing had improved with people still drinking throughout the week leaving broken bottles in the alleyway. The city council’s transport operations manager Aaron Haymes said public consultation helped it to become clear not everyone was in favour of closing the alleyway. The proposal to close the alleyway was opposed by the Disabled Persons Assembly, Orion and a small number of residents. In a deputation at the meeting, Disabled Persons Assembly president Philip Haythornthwaite said the closure would make it difficult for anyone with a physical disability to get around the area with ease.

City councillor Vicki Buck interrupted the exchange suggesting there were about four issues the board could sort out and give answers to. But Ms Broughton said: “Of course we can but we can’t have a chairman who is abusing a resident”. Mr Mora responded: “Excuse me I was not abusing a resident. I did not abuse anybody, I was just asking him to stick to the timeframe. There is no abuse at all and I don’t believe I have any grounds for a apology”. The issue was again raised later on in the meeting with Ms Broughton addressing her concerns over the CRRA’s “need to be treated the same as other residents.” But Mr Mora said they were not sidelined and had in excess of 20 minutes. Western News was told a meeting will be held between council staff and the board to see if the initial questions by the CRRA can be answered properly in the next few weeks.
By Georgia O’Connor-Harding FRUSTRATED residents wanting a rowdy alleyway nearby shut down have had their plea denied. The alleyway between Aurora St and Buchanans Rd will remain open to the public due to the high costs surrounding its closure. The decision was made by the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board at its public meeting last Tuesday. As part of the decision, it was resolved that city council staff would report back to the community board on options to upgrade the lighting with LED lights as a possible option. A petition signed by nearly 40 residents was presented to the community board more than a year ago urging the alleyway to be shut down. Residents had endured loud parties and fighting from Thursday through to Sunday most weeks. In a bid to address the issue, the city council ran a public consultation last August on the closure of the alleyway. But during an investigation as part of the consultation process, the city council found Orion

Community battles graffiti GRAFFITI: St Albans is the worst suburb across the city for graffiti alongside the central city.
City councillor Sara Templeton talks about the city’s graffiti problem, particularly in St Albans, and how the community has responded to it It wasn’t long after the earthquakes in 2011 that our city had a sudden rise in graffiti. Damaged and vacant buildings were ripe for tagging and our public spaces became targets for vandals. This was true in Heathcote Valley where I live, as it was across the city. So a group of us called the city council and joined the graffiti volunteers programme Off the Wall. Supplied with hi-vis, brushes and paint, we kept on top of the local problem, reporting it for removal by contractors when we couldn’t do the work ourselves. The problem soon tapered off as taggers realised that their marks weren’t going to stay around for long, and it’s stayed pretty good since then. community. Quick removal is the key, so reporting it for removal as soon as it’s seen is important. Conversely, the graffiti that is left attracts more graffiti, and we see this time and time again. City council can remove graffiti on road boundary fences, lamp posts and other similar public places, but the green roadside cabinets are looked after by their owners – Chorus, Orion or others and the city council can’t remove graffiti on private buildings. City council will pass on the details if you call, but contacting the company directly will have a quicker result. City council does an annual graffiti survey and the results are striking. In 2013, there were 1/05/2014 11,592 tags11:51:35 spotteda.m. and, in 2016,

Hunter loses hair for best mate By Julia Evans TYLER MOORE would’ve thought the head shave by his best mate would have been “epicer than epic”. On Friday, Tyler’s mate Hunter Allen, 9, had his head shaved to raise funds for the Child Cancer Foundation – the disease which claimed Tyler 18 months ago. It was an emotional moment for Hunter and Tyler’s parents – more so because it was Tyler’s mother Sarah Moore who shaved Hunter’s head. Tyler’s younger sister Hannah who is four was also present, watching from her dad’s lap. Tyler Moore To add to the emotion, the hall where Hunter’s head was shaved was where Tyler’s funeral was held. “He would’ve been so proud of his friend,” Mrs Moore said. She said it was very special but a very emotional thing to go through. The boys met through their mothers but hit it off when playing Lego, Minecraft and having Nerf wars. Tyler was four-and-a-half when he went to his parents complaining of pain and doctors found the cancerous tumour on his bladder. His father Micheal Moore said it was the size
of a big potato and doctors said it was probably something that had always been there. After 18 months of tough treatment and the all clear, Tyler relapsed and the doctor said there was nothing further they could do. He passed away two months before his seventh birthday. Tyler was a courageous boy who took it all in his stride, Mrs Moore said. She said they went on a few family holidays and tried to do a lot of special things with him before he passed. Hunter announced to the Cotswold School assembly that he was nervous just as hair started falling to the ground. But once it was gone, he couldn’t stop rubbing his head, he said it felt like it was made of pins and needles. Hunter’s mother Cara Allen said he loves his hair, he was playing with it right up until the shaving. The idea came to Hunter more than a year ago but initially he was just going to shave his head. Ms Allen came up with the idea of doing it as part of the foundation’s awareness week and Hunter has now raised more than $2000 and counting – his initial target was only $800. She said Tyler was part of the family so there was not a tribute more fitting. “There’s always a special place in our hearts for Tyler,” she said.

She spoke to Georgia O’Connor-Harding about leading the former Burwood Primary School through the aftermath of the February 2011 earthquake and why she could never leave the education industry

How have you found your new role at Westburn School so far? It is wonderful being part of an incredibly positive school. It is more diverse than any school I have worked in previously and I’d say that diversity is a strength as well as a feature of the school. Westburn has just joined the Christchurch Schools Rebuild programme. It is an exciting time for the school and for me as the principal to come in and join that. What will this mean for your school? It will be more of an upgrade than a rebuild so the name is a bit misleading. Obviously we didn’t get the same level of damage as some schools across the city. It is an opportunity to ensure our school buildings allow us to reflect 21st century teaching. You mentioned your school
style
has got diverse. Has that just happened recently? It has been over sometime. I attended Westburn many years ago and there were very few pupils that weren’t New Zealand European. Whereas now 24 per cent of our population is Chinese and we have a huge number of nationalities. It is a feature for our school for us to have an international celebration each year. Where had you come from before you got this role? My first principal’s job was at Burwood Primary School which was merged following the February 2011 earthquake. Then I went to Southbridge School and I have been there for the past three years. It was different, I learnt a lot about farming and the pressures on the school that has a role that fluctuates significantly throughout the

year with dairy farmers coming in and out of the district. I learnt a lot about belonging to a school that really needed to be supported by its community due to its rural location. I found going through the merger process at Burwood through no one’s fault was not the most desirable process. To go to Southbridge in a way healed my soul again after what was a pretty stressful time leading a community through a time of grief as their school came to an end. What was it like leading Burwood Primary School through the aftermath of the earthquake? I came after the earthquake. It was challenging and rewarding. I was regularly humbled by that community who was living in some pretty awful conditions yet who retained a positive spirit through it all. I have great admiration for the people of Burwood and how they managed that process. I was at Burwood for a year and a half. The first six months it was announced the school would be closed – they had that horrible meeting in Lincoln where the Ministry of Education announced who was closing and who was merging.

We fought it and then months after it was announced we were going to merge. The school wasn’t physically damaged by the earthquake but the community was. It must have been a significant experience to lead through such a difficult time? It was my first principal role and in the first six months I was given the challenge of helping the community try persuade Education Minister Hekia Parata to change her mind. You can imagine the angst in the community which was heightened by what they were experiencing at the time and the frustration in dealing with agencies over what happens to their properties. It was really hard for them to see the new school as a positive initially. Did you find a lot of children after the earthquakes weren’t as focused? I think children adapt and there are some emotional needs to be met. They come to school ready to move on. One thing that sticks with me is the children at Burwood designed a picture of what it might like look like when all the houses in the area had

been knocked down – they could build a new town with anything they wanted there. And one boy showed us a picture and it had a bulldozer with a wrecking ball knocking down houses. We said to him this is a brand new city environment, what is this? He said his picture was of a house being knocked down because for him that was the new normal. And it really hit me at that point as adults we don’t know what children’s understanding is and they see things in a different way. For him that was the new reality. As for us we knew that wouldn’t be the future because we had a past to base it on. When and where did you start your teaching career? I started at South Hornby School around 1990. I have always taught in the city. I went from South Hornby to Medbury School, then Templeton School and Beckingham Primary School before going onto principalship. Did you have a favourite subject you like to teach? I loved teaching maths. Maths is one of those subjects about finding the rule and pattern. I love when children think they can’t do maths and showing

them. Once you unlock the knowledge to answer the problem it suddenly all clicks into place. It is a lovely logical subject. My favourite subject when I was at school was reading. I wish everyone read more. What are your favourite books? I am into Scandinavian fiction myself at the moment. For reading to kids I love Bruce Coville, Gary Paulsen and Michael Foreman. Do you remember a lot about what Westburn was like when you attended? Yes I do. It was such a great school and that hasn’t changed. The quality of education that our children get, the opportunity and social interaction is just amazing. The environment is still the same. It has been updated over the years. I respected the principal at the time we had here and I find it daunting to be following in his footsteps as well as David Brown who has just retired after being there for 19 years. If you weren’t in the teaching industry what would you have got into? When I was at high school I

wanted to be a physio and tour with the All Blacks. But that never would have worked out because the instant I got into education I realised that was exactly where I should be. I have never thought about leaving. This is what I love. I never get up in the morning and don’t want to go to work because of what is on or how tired I am. Teaching is not a job you can finish at the end of the day. What is the most stressful part of your job? If you asked me, my frustration is that so much gets put onto schools and nothing gets taken off. Sexuality education, financial literacy is now part of the curriculum. There seems to be
lots of things added to it to meet needs society has and yet we are still judged by our results in reading, writing and maths. Is it putting pressure on your teachers to master the skills of teaching these subjects well? Teachers refer to the curriculum as the “overcrowded curriculum” now. Things that have been traditionally taught in the home are coming into the school. So where do you find the time? Teachers do it and a really good job of it but it is becoming a more societal role as well as educational role. Schools are evolving to meet that need but we don’t have resources in terms of the social workers.

The Art Department has established itself as a successful subject area in the school for many years, gaining exceptional scholarship results year upon year; making it one of the benchmark Art departments in the country. This year Art students gained a total of 24 scholarships and one outstanding (top scholar in Sculpture). This is out of the total of 62 scholarships school wide.
The sPACIFICally Pacific Supreme Awards were held this year at Haeata Community Campus on March 7th. Each school nominates their top two Pasifika Academic Achievers. This year Burnside High School’s Danielle Endacott won the Amosa Faafoi Memorial Cup for Top Pasifika Girl Academic Achiever and Kieron Elms was runner up for Top Pasifka Boy.

For the third year in a row Team 1 from Burnside High School are again the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Team Champions. The tournament was held at Russley Golf Club. The team have qualified to take part in the National Championships in Hastings on September 4th 2017. They will be defending their national title from last year.
The PTA Uniform Shop has expanded this year and has a new look shop stocking new and second hand items. The shop is located at the front of the school in A1. Now is the time to purchase winter uniforms, all items are available at the shop. Opening Hours are Monday lunchtime 1:00pm 2:00pm, Tuesdays after school 2.45pm - 4.00pm, and one extra day Wednesday 5th April after school 2.30pm - 4.00pm.

Trenchard wins place on SPORTS national track cycling team Burnside take By Andrew King BURNSIDE HIGH School cyclist Matthew Trenchard has been selected for New Zealand to compete in China in August. The 17-year-old was included alongside former Burnside student Josh Scott and former Christchurch Girls’ High School student Kate Smith in the 13-strong team. They will compete in the UCI Junior World Track Championships on August 23-27. Trenchard said it was a dream come true to be selected for the team. “My ultimate goal is to be a cyclist full-time, and now that is within touching distance,” he said. Eight years ago a neighbour showed Trenchard an advertisement in The Star to give competitive cycling a go at Denton Park and he has been there ever since. Trenchard lives and breathes the sport, spending up to 17 hours per week on the bike as well as working for his coach at his bike shop in Tower Junction. “I love the speed, the adrenaline, the fact that crashes are millimetres away from happening and the excitement,” he said. By Andrew King BURNSIDE HIGH School have continued their charge towards another national volleyball title after winning the Canterbury championships on Sunday. The girls’ team cruised past St Andrew’s College 3-0 in the division 1 final at the Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre. Burnside will now turn their focus towards the nationals at the end of the month and the chance of claiming a third consecutive title. Coach Sam Ryborn, who last week returned from coaching the New Zealand girls’ team at the under-18 Asian volleyball championship in China, was happy with his team’s tournament ahead of next week’s national tournament. Marlen Jahn was named most valuable player with her powerful spiking and serving too much for the opposing teams. The boys’ division 1 was won by Shirley Boys’ High School, ending Riccarton High School’s four-year run as champions. Burnside and Shirley will now play in the top 32 at the New Zealand secondary schools’ championships at the end of the month in Palmerston North.

Rise in number of motorists running red lights By Gabrielle Stuart CHRISTCHURCH’S growing red light-running problem is leaving dozens of injuries in its wake. In the past year, there were 65 crashes which left people injured after drivers ran red lights, up from 42 the year before. At the city’s top 10 worst intersections this month, almost 5400 drivers ran red lights in a single day. That was up 31 per cent from last year, and 64 per cent more than in 2014. They do not include people turning right across an intersection on a red light. The worst for red light-runners was the intersection of Blenheim Rd and Mandeville St, where 652 were detected on a single day on Thursday, December 1. Police figures have also grown. In the last year, 1491 people were ticketed for running red lights in Christchurch, up from

What causes OOS? The Department of Labour states: “One of the favourable explanations for OOS is that it is caused by muscles being held tense or tight for too long.’’ These conditions may be caused by repetitive tasks, forceful exertions, vibrations, mechanical compression, or sustained or awkward positions. The shorter and tenser the muscle, the harder it pulls on the places it attaches to (e.g. the bone). When this happens in the forearm the pull at those attachments and tendons causes irritation and inflammation of those areas. This will be noticed as pain in the elbow and wrist. When this happens in the neck and shoulder area, it will be noticed as local pain, stiffness and sometimes headaches. The nerves run right through the muscles. Tension on the muscles causes pressure on the nerves. As the muscles shorten, the nerves running through them have a tendency to both shorten and slide less well. This causes the nerves to radiate pain throughout the arm. Triggerpoints are areas in your muscles, where a few muscle fibres have contracted

Rise in number of motorists running red lights By Gabrielle Stuart CHRISTCHURCH’S growing red light-running problem is leaving dozens of injuries in its wake. In the past year, there were 65 crashes which left people injured after drivers ran red lights, up from 42 the year before. At the city’s top 10 worst intersections this month, almost 5400 drivers ran red lights in a single day. That was up 31 per cent from last year, and 64 per cent more than in 2014. They do not include people turning right across an intersection on a red light. The worst for red light-runners was the intersection of Blenheim Rd and Mandeville St, where 652 were detected on a single day on Thursday, December 1. Police figures have also grown. In the last year, 1491 people were ticketed for running red lights in Christchurch, up from
